Today, Friday, September 13, 2024, the XI ValgrAI Research Morning has been held, marking the return of these monthly meetings after a well-deserved summer break. The event, which took place at 9:00 am, brought together experts and enthusiasts in artificial intelligence to explore two cutting-edge topics in the field.
Featured Presentations
Explainability in Deep Learning Models Applied to Spatio-Temporal Problems
Javier García Siguenza, researcher at the Universitat de Alacant, presented a talk on the crucial importance of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) in today’s society. García Siguenza highlighted how AI is transforming various sectors, from industry to decision-making, which has increased concerns about its transparency. The researcher emphasized that XAI is fundamental to obtaining a better understanding of the behavior of AI systems, which can help in both ethical and technical aspects. However, he noted that the application of explainability techniques in spatio-temporal problems represents a significant challenge, due to the limited number of available options and the fact that their implementation often penalizes performance in exchange for the explainability obtained.
Invariance of Image Quality Metrics to Affine Transformations
Nuria Alabau, researcher at the Universitat de València, presented an innovative study on image quality metrics in relation to affine transformations. Alabau explained that, although deep architectures are leaders in predicting the subjective quality of images, current evaluation methods ignore affine transformations such as rotation, translation, scaling, and changes in illumination. The researcher revealed that her study found that current metrics do not replicate human invariance to these transformations. This finding suggests that AI models need to be adjusted to consider these human visual properties, beyond the commonly evaluated generic distortions.
