This past Friday, April 4th, the sixteenth edition of the ValgrAI Research Mornings was held, a monthly meeting for artificial intelligence enthusiasts. The event, which took place online, attracted a diverse audience of academics, students, and industry professionals eager to learn about the latest research and developments in the field of AI.
Innovation and Reclamation in Language Model Use
The first speaker, Chiara Ferrando from the Universitat Politècnica de València, presented her study titled “The Phenomenon of Slurs Reclamation: A study on Italian LGBTQ+ Reclaimed Uses with Large Language Models”. Ferrando explored how Large Language Models can be used to better understand the reclamation of pejorative terms within the Italian LGBTQ+ community. Her research highlighted the importance of balancing hate speech detection with freedom of speech, offering new perspectives on linguistic sensitivity and its social impact.
Spatial Statistics to Improve Emergency Responses
Next, Esther Ródenas, also from the Universitat Politècnica de València, presented her research “Against the Clock: Spatial Statistics to Predict the Demand for Emergency Health Vehicles in Valencia”. This study examines how spatial statistics can be used to optimize the management and deployment of emergency health vehicles. Using real data from over 98,000 georeferenced calls, Ródenas showed how advanced techniques can predict and improve the efficiency of emergency services, a topic of great relevance for public administration and community health.
